The wine shop is currently open for business and the book shop will be opening soon.

Thomas George, Founder

Thomas grew up in London, England and Asheville, North Carolina. While studying abroad he visited Burgundy with his family. This trip and the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 1 course provided the inspiration to leave a career in finance and dedicate himself to the world of wine.

Thomas began his wine career at the respected Florio restaurant in San Francisco, where he learned the intricacies of creating a world class wine list and a devotion to stellar customer service. He then moved to Napa Valley to work in winemaking and sales & marketing at Round Pond Estate and Failla Wines before gaining more winemaking experience at Whitehaven Wines in Marlborough, New Zealand.

Thomas holds the WSET Diploma in Wines & Spirits, is a WSET Educator and a Certified Wine Educator (The Society of Wine Educators). He is a graduate of The University of Virginia, where he wrote his undergraduate Distinguished Majors thesis on the socioeconomics of the Burgundy wine region.

LouAnn Lofton, Literary Director

LouAnn is an avid reader and devoted bibliophile, as well as an editor and published author. She worked for years for the financial website, The Motley Fool, first as a writer and later as managing editor, where she oversaw all of the site’s online content and the team responsible for it. Her book, Warren Buffett Invests Like a Girl: And Why You Should, Too, was published in June 2011. Thanks to the book, and to Buffett’s sense of humor, he granted her an audience with him, which still seems a bit surreal to her. (He’s a charmer, of course.)

Having grown up in south Mississippi, she’s happiest surrounded by humidity and good storytelling, which means she feels right at home in Charleston. She prefers modern literary fiction, compelling memoirs, and the classics, but she’s thrilled when anyone anywhere reads an actual book, no matter the subject.

Carolwayne Tavener, Marketing Director

As Marketing Director, Carolwayne’s role at Bacchus & Books encompasses everything from the look and feel of the business to management of merchandising and branding. She is dedicated to creating an experience for our guests that is both personalized and memorable.

Carolwayne has many years of management and customer service experience, having served as the Regional Operations Manager for Keller Williams in the Carolinas. She also holds degrees in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing Technologies, has a Paralegal degree and is a Certified Health Coach. Carolwayne has also published a children’s book, Travel with me from A to Z, to show young children the value of making healthy food choices.
